Sing & Sign Jukebox

We’re delighted to be recruiting for our singing and signing choir, with support from Devon Council’s Growing Communities Fund.

Sing and Sign Jukebox began in Spring 2022. A small choir of people from the Learning Disability community (carers and service users) came together to sing and sign iconic pop. Since then we have performed at two packed professional events with more planned this year.

How does it work?

Participants choose the songs, are taught the signs with oversight from local Makaton tutor Sarah Thorpe. We meet on occasional Saturday mornings in Newton Abbot and are coached by our brilliant singing teacher Joanne Rogers to sing together and sign along.

The choir is free to join and the project is made accessible with an offer of free enabling and a payment to each singer towards their travel costs, time and expenses.

If you would like to be part of Sing and Sign Jukebox, please get in touch! You’ll join like-minded people in a no-pressure environment, have a laugh, learn some signs, and gain confidence with singing.

Hear it from our choir:
“We have loved it and have both learnt a lot already. I have seen my service user gain in confidence and engage well with the other attendees. Lucy and Jo are amazing and make the sessions fun and enjoyable.”

Nicky Rawlings (Choir participant and enabler who joined us in our Sing and Sign choir at Newtons Place)

We regularly host internships, which offer a professional and collaborative space where you will not only learn a variety of new creative and producing skills but also take part in a range of live performance experiences.

The Internship experience:

Since interning with Documental Productions in such a short space of time I have already developed a valuable skillset, from funding application forms to learning to sign at our Sing and Sign Jukebox Chior in Newton Abbot. I’m really excited about our upcoming projects and to continue to develop as an assistant producer.

Jessamie Edkins-O’Brien (Intern Assistance Producer for Documental Productions)
